Family Guide to Maine Hiking Trails
Over
the past several years my family has hiked several trails in Maine.
Here are some of our Favorites. I will rate them based from the point
of view of a two middle-aged adults with preteen children that go on a
day hike a couple times a year.
Bradbury Mountain, Pownal State Park
- At only about 300' of total elevation this is a great first hike for
children. Difficulty rating 1.5 out of 5 stars.
Wolf's Neck Woods, Freeport
State Park - Easy Hike for kids of any age, even has handicap accessible trails. Difficulty rating 1 out of 5 stars.

Mount Blue, Weld
State Park - A tough hike for young kids. My son made it up at 4 yrs
but we had to carry him down. 2900' elevation. Difficulty rating 5 out
of 5 stars.
Tumbledown Mountain, Weld
A tough hike for young kids. My son made it at 5 yrs with difficulty on
the way down. Total elevation 3068, although we only went to the crater
lake. We went the brook trail and returned 3 years later to do the loop
trail. One of our Favorites. Difficulty rating 4.5 out of 5 stars.

Wight Brook/Step Falls, Newry
A moderately easy hike even for young children. Only about a 1/2 mile
with not much elevation. Plus the added fun of swimming in the pools
and sliding down the rocks at these gentle falls. Another family
favorite on a very hot day. Just before Grafton Notch State Park off
Rt. 26. Difficulty rating 1.5 out of 5 stars.
Table Rock Trail - Grafton Notch State Park, Bethel A lot of
hand over hand climbing but still not as difficult as Mt. Blue or
Tumbledown. The actual climb is about 900' vertical. Difficulty rating
3 out of 5 stars.

Eyebrow Loop Trail - Grafton Notch State Park, Bethel A moderately difficult hike, part of the Appalachian Trail. Difficulty rating 4 out of 5 stars.
Ledges Trail - Pleasant Mountain, Denmark A moderately difficult hike, on the backside of the mountain from Shawnee Peak Skiing area. Difficulty rating 4 out of 5 stars.

Monhegan Island A lot of up and down hiking and clamoring
over rocks. Beautiful views. The only downside is the $35 per person
boat ride to get you there. Difficulty rating 2.5 out of 5 stars.
